President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect.
This was made known in a statement signed by Willie Bassey, Director, Information Office today, June 9, 2023 on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
According to Bassey, this is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
Bassey disclosed that Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.
Recall that Godwin Emefiele sanctioned the popular new #1000, #500 and #200 naira notes which caused naira crunch leading to industrial action by labour union during the last administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
Godwin Emefiele CFR (born 4 August 1961) is a Nigerian politician, economist and banker who has served as governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria since 4 June 2014.
