WHY YOU ARE NEVER HAPPY
A major cause of unhappiness is that we perpetually pursue our dreams that we forget to enjoy our present moment because we THINK we are not successful until we reach our destination.
This is simply a self-imposed unhappiness because you’ve chosen a faulty way of thinking. For starters, life is an endless journey because regardless of your feats today, there will always be something more to look forward to, especially because human wants are insatiable.
For example, as kids, we wanted to get into the University. Afterwards, we wanted a job. Then we wanted to get married. Then we wanted a family. Next, we want our kids to grow up and become adults.
Then we want our grandchildren and the aspirations continue. Finally, we begin to reflect on our childhood and miss it all and we wish we could start all over again.
You know why? Because we only yearned for the destination but never enjoyed the journey.
Once, a boy who wanted to know the secret of happiness travelled the desert for 40 days to meet a sage. Busy with other guests, the sage asked him to take a tour around his castle for two hours and return.
Then he gave him a teaspoon with two drops of oil, asking him not to let it spill as he moved around. As a result, the boy focused on the drops of oil, ensuring it didn’t spill.
After two hours, he returned and the sage started asking him if he saw the unique paintings in his house or his lovely garden that took him 10 years to create.
The boy was ashamed as he had only focused on the oil and ignored the beauties in the castle. So, the sage asked him to return and feed his eyes.
This time, he explored the magnificence of the castle such as the garden, mountains, paintings, walls, everything.
As he explained in detail all he had witnessed when he returned, the man asked about the drops of oil and as he looked, he realized it was gone.
Then the sage said to him, the secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world and never forget the drops of oil in your spoon.
Likewise, the secret of happiness is to fulfil your lifelong goals but never forget enjoy the journey. Enjoy your childhood, your singlehood, your humble beginnings, the days of little, struggle and the days of lack and so on.
…because, as Sigmund Freud said, One day, in retrospect, your years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.
