What President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has done in maritime sector in the last one year cannot be compared with what many past leaders achieved in their entire tenure in office.
Comrade Engr. Matthew Alalade, the
Immediate Past National President: Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers, Water Transport Senior Staff Association who made this submission in an exclusive chat with Daily Insight Nigeria while rating President Tinubu in his first year in office also admonished Nigerians to give him more time so he can do more.
In his words: “The President’s policy on Marine and Blue Economy is a right step in the right direction. I want to sincerely commend the Nigeria Customs Service headed by Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi for taking the initiatives to re-open some of the land borders, also his mediation with neighboring countries. It is however too early to praise him, I think we should give him another 2 to 3 years if he can maintain the tempo, but so far, he has really done well.
“CGC Adeniyi should also consider opening the ports too, the roads leading to the ports are now good and accessible. I think if the ports are opened, goods will come in through the ports, the issue of double taxation on the part of the end users will be a thing of the past” he stressed.
Going forward as far as the maritime sector is concerned, Engr. Alalade admonished the government to intensify effort in maximizing the potentials of the sector saying “if the government harness the potentials of Marine and Blue Economy, Nigeria will surely have enough funds to run the economy more than we currently realize from oil and gas.
“The issue of security on our waters should also be considered a priority by setting up the National Coast Guard that will guarantee maximum security on our waters so as to attract more investment from other countries in the world”.
