There’s need for the Federal Government to legislatively establish National Goods and Services Pricing Regulatory Agency (NGSPRA), a price control means of discomfiting the hike in prices of essential goods presently being endured by Nigerians.
Jamil Mikhail Yahaya, Doctor of Philosophy in Science Education,
Federal College of Education (Technical),
Gombe State, made this submission in an open letter to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the demands of the Organised Labour Unions in relation to a new living wage that could cater for the basic needs of a common public servant in Nigeria.
Yahaya who suggested that NGSPRA should be under a Director General who would be answerable to the Honourable Minister of Budget and Economic Planning also noted that “The agency’s primary ideal will be to insure that all goods and services in Nigeria are enciphered with a special code number applicable to them for ease of identification. These enciphered goods and services would have a price attached to them collectively, which is covered by the law. This means for any single service’s or item’s price to change, there must be proper legislation to that effect.

“Thus, nothing collectively or in groups and no company has the right to increase the price of any commodity without writing to the agency who would further the same to the lawmakers for all the legislative protocols. This would mean the request for an proliferation in any price of goods or services must be batted and passed into law, else no price increase.
“This recommendation may feel impracticable to numerous Nigerians especially those who are in the business of hoarding and manufacturing, but the verity is that it’s really practicable with the proper people in places of authorities of the agency. Other countries are doing commodity analogous to this and are safe from the arms of gratuitous affectation and inhuman price hikes” he maintained.
The Doctor of Philosophy who noted that Nigeria’s frugality appeared to defy numerous profitable laws, propositions and or prognostications, also the approach to resolving similar problems means a Nigerian approach, also editorialized that” similar approach is the establishment of this kind of agency with strong power of authority to oppressively deal with defaulters and law violators.
“Coming up with such an Agency isn’t going to be easy, President Tinubu have to be strong, determined and straightforward as numerous individualities and groups would challenge the decision but this approach will bring an end to the mournings of the common citizens” he assured.
