Health Writers worry over rising cost of essential medicines, holds comference

Health reporters under the aegis of the Health Writers’ Association of Nigeria (HEWAN) said it’s concerned about the cost of essential medicines and increased complaint burden in the country.

In a statement concertedly inked by the President, Chioma Obinna and the Secretary, Lucy Osuizigbo-Okechukwu, it explained that cases with habitual ails and numerous vulnerable Nigerians find it difficult to buy their specifics and access quality healthcare services.

The statement stated that the development needed the HEWAN periodic conference coming up on June 27 at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Alausa, Ikeja.

It said that the theme of the conference is- “Dwindling Local Drug Production and High Cost of Essential Medicines: Rethinking Strategies for Growth”.

“Presently, numerous Nigerians can no longer buy drugs, coupled with the high position of fake medicines in rotation.

“HEWAN, in line with its fancies and operations, believes that the array of experts from the pharmaceutical assiduity would meditate on the issue as part of chancing a continuing result to the problem.”

“The keynote speaker, Mr Oluwatosin Jolayemi, President, Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Group of Manufacturers’ Association of Nigeria (PMG- MAN), and other stakeholders would bandy some of the challenges and hindrances to original medicine manufacturing in the country and ways to address them.

“TheSub-Themes for the event which are ‘Funding as a Catalyst for a Resilient Pharmaceutical Sector’ and ‘HPV Vaccination in Nigeria Challenges, Prospects, and Way Forward’, would be delivered by Pharm. Adewale Oladigbolu,
National Chairman, Association of Community druggists of Nigeria (ACPN), and Dr. Abimbola Bowale, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, respectively.

“Pharm. Akinjide Adeosun, Chief Executive Officer, St. Racheal’s Pharmaceuticals, would president the conference.

“HEWAN will also be awarding Pharm. Fidelis Ayebae of Fidson Healthcare PLC, the Director- General, Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), Prof. Babatunde Salako and Dr. Ignorgbor Jude Chukwumeke, an academic and experimenter in public health and environmental microbiology for outstanding performance in their areas of speciality.
