Customs Intercepts 844 Rifles, 112,500 Rounds of Ammunition in Onne


The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has made a significant seizure of arms and security at the Port Harcourt Area II Command in Onne.

The Comptroller General of Customs Adewale Adeniyi made this known during a press conference at Onne, Rivers State on July 1, 2024.

Acting on credible intelligence on June 21, 2024, Customs officers, while examining a suspicious 1×40- container from Turkey, discovered it to contain 844 rifles and 112,500 rounds of live ammunition. These particulars items were concealed among doors, furniture, plumbing fittings, and leather bags, with a total duty-paid value of ₦4,171,710,0.

During the press conference, the CGC asserted that “This interception underscores our commitment to public security and public safety. We remain watchful and married to our duty. Three suspects have been detained in connection with the seizure, with a thorough disquisition underway to insure all involved face legal consequences.”

Alsoo, on June 29, 2024, Customs officers interdicted eight 40-foot containers heading to a bonded warehouse from Onne Port. These containers contained bottles of CSC Cough saccharinity with Codeine, tablets of Trodol Benzhexol, and 720 bales of used clothes with the duty- paid value of ₦13,915,710,000.00.

“These seizures were from our robust Risk Management System and collaboration with intelligence communities both locally and internationally. The Containers bearing the arms and security will be handed over to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons for farther disquisition and execution. Licenses and permits of storages and outstations involved have been suspended, and officers set up complicit will face severe warrants, ” said Adeniyi.

Comptroller General Adeniyi confided the Customs Area Comptroller Onne Port, Mohammed Babandede, and his platoon for their professionalism. He also conceded the pivotal support from original and transnational mates as well as other government agencies.

“This seizure serves as a strong warning to others meaning analogous misfortunes. We’ll run you out of business; the NCS continues to demonstrate its fidelity to guarding Nigeria’s borders and icing the security of its citizens, ” Adeniyi concluded.
