The Lagos State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to a nonstop sanitation advocacy crusade aimed at breeding sustainable environmental sanitation and hygiene practices among residents.
This action, emphasized by Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, took place during a community-grounded sanitation exercise at Alamutu Market in Idi- Oro, Mushin.
Rotimi-Akodu and his team were actively involved in cleaning the drainage on Agege Motor Road, expressing the government’s commitment to leading by example.
The Special Adviser stressed the significance of maintaining a clean terrain to help complaint spread, prompting dealers to handle food hygienically and keep their surroundings clean.
The market, preliminarily shut down due to unsanitary conditions, serves as a memorial of the consequences of poor hygiene practices. Traders in the market were encouraged to clear stacks of garbage and avoid road trading to maintain cleanliness.
The sanitation advocacy is set to continue across all 57 LGs/LCDAs and colorful public spaces, aiming to cultivate voluntary adherence to good sanitation practices among residents.
Rotimi-Akodu mentioned that if there’s no significant enhancement, the government might consider introducing monthly environmental sanitation exercises.
Dr. Omobolaji Gaji, Permanent Secretary of the Office of Environmental Services, stressed the exercise’s role in raising mindfulness about the significance of sanitation for health and life.
Residents were encouraged to report unsanitary actions, emphasizing community responsibility in maintaining a clean terrain.
LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, stressed the significance of residents retaining waste bins and patronizing PSP operators instead of cart pushers. Effective waste operation practices were linked to perfecting profitable conditioning across Lagos.
The advocacy exercise covered Agege Motor Road, Alamatu Market, Idi- Oro, Labinjo Street, Adeyanju Street, and Makinde Street in Mushin Local Government Area.
The ongoing sanitation crusade underscores Lagos State’s commitment to fostering a culture of cleanliness and environmental sustainability among its residents.
