Going on holiday improves mental health, reduces stress says Neuro-psychiatrist

A Consultant Neuro-psychiatrist, Dr Maymunah Yusuf-Kadiri, says that going on holiday or traveling improves memtal health, enhances overall well-being and helps to reduce stress.

Yusuf-Kadiri, the Medical Director, Pinnacle Medical Services Ltd., made the assertion in an interview on Tuesday.

She said that traveling or going on holiday offered the brain time to rest and recover, leading to improved performance and productivity.

The Neuro-psychiatrist also said that exposure to new societies, languages, and geographies could help stimulate the brain and enhance creativity.

According to her, traveling make people encounter different ways of thinking and living, which can inspire new ideas, boost creative for problem-solving and invention upon returning to diurnal life.

“Traveling, whether it’s a weekend getaway or an extended holiday, offers more than just a break from diurnal routines, it has cerebral advantages and profound internal health benefits that can enhance overall well-being.

“The change of scenery, new experience and taking a break from diurnal liabilities help to lower cortisol situations, the body’s primary stress hormone, thereby reducing stress.

*Being in a new terrain can intrude the routine stressors and give a sense of escape and relaxation with ameliorate mood, situations of happiness and satisfaction.

“Changing terrain, especially one that’s relaxing and free from everyday stressors, can ameliorate sleep quality. Exposure to natural sun, fresh air, and physical exertion during trip can help regulate sleep patterns and lead to better rest,” she said.

Yusuf-Kadiri also said that holiday could boost confidence, broaden perspective to help individualities more manage their life’s challenges, enhance social connections, reduce passions of insulation and fostering a sense of connection with the global community.

“The expectation of a trip can boost mood even before the trip begins, and the experiences during trip produce lasting positive recollections which are a source of joy and nostalgia, contributing to long- term happiness.

“Leaving your comfort zone to witness new societies and surroundings can lead to self-discovery and a deeper understanding of oneself which can contribute to particular growth, improved self-esteem and a more fulfilling life.

*By stepping out of routine or going on holiday, individualities can ameliorate their overall well-being and return home with a renewed sense of perspective and purpose.
