The Managing Director/CEO of the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, has called on private organisations and residers to adopt streets and communities as part of their Commercial Social Responsibility (CSR).
Gbadegesin said in a statement on Tuesday that the action would enhance environmental cleanliness across Lagos State.
He emphasised the significance of community involvement in maintaining sanitation, prompting businesses and individualities to play a more active part in the cleanliness of their immediate surroundings.

“Adopting a street or community is an excellent way for organisations to contribute meaningfully to the megacity’s cleanliness drive.
“It goes beyond just placing wastebins; it’s about taking responsibility for the cleanliness and conservation of entire neighborhoods.
“This action will also serve as a strong CSR strategy, serving both the environment and the organisations involved” Gbadegesin said.
The LAWMA boss linked the recent cholera outbreak to poor environmental practices similar as open defecation and illegal waste disposal.
He stressed that these could be eased through sustained community sanitation sweats.
According to him, “Sanitation should be a diurnal habit, ingrained in our culture, and this is what we should be tutoring our children”.
While commenting on the on-going community clean-up crusade by LAWMA and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Gbadegesin opined that “What we’re doing right now is sensitisation, and yes, the yearly sanitation exercise is coming back.
“We’re going from community to community, engaging with original stakeholders, and addressing residers’ challenges”.
The LAWMA boss said that the Authority was moving on with the” Adoot- a- Bin” programme aimed at encouraging homes to containerise their waste effectively.
“The new LAWMA smart bins are revolutionising ménage waste operation.
“We aim for every home to have its own bin, making it easier for residents to effectively contain their waste.
“To make this accessible, we’ve introduced a 24- month installment plan.
“What sets these bins apart is their smart technology with an RFID label and geolocation capabilities.
“This allows us to track when bins are empty, ensuring effective service from our operators” Gbadegesin said.
He reiterated the state government’s collaboration with the private sector to enhance waste disposal facilities.
He listed one osf similar collaborations as the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with Jospong Group to make material recovery installations and ultramodern tips in Lagos.
He added that LAWMA was also working with local government authorities to establish community recycling centers, to give residents with dedicated spaces to dispose their recyclables and receive inducements.
On LAWMA Academy, he said, “We’re tutoring the coming generation about the value of recycling and the significance of maintaining a clean terrain.
“Presently, we have an on-going summer academy that will last for a month, and in the coming few months, we are going to open a gate for online classes with instrument on the LAWMA Academy website”.
He reaffirmed LAWMA’s commitment to improving the welfare of road sweepers, adding that the agency was enforcing health insurance and skill development programmes for its sweepers.
