The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists, fleet operators and truck drivers against speeding, overloading and using expired tyres to reduce road crashes.
The new FRSC Sector Commander, Mrs Joyce Alexander, gave the warning during a meeting with motorists and transport unions on Friday, in Awka.
Alexander said the warning came necessary due to the ways motorists drive recklessly, overloading their vehicles and transported people together with animals regardless of the egregious consequences.

“I have barely stayed three weeks in Anambra and I’ve been visiting different areas to cover compliance to road safety rules where I discovered problems of overloading, speeding and road inhibition.
“This meeting is for us to talk to motorists and line drivers on the need to borrow a safer station, observe business rules, and consider other road users for a safer traveling experience in Anambra.
“We cannot achieve that without cooperation and synergy between the Corps and the transport operators. I am appealing for your support as major stakeholders in the transport sector,” she said.
The Sector Commander observed that the use of expired tyres, overloading, speeding and carrying fuel in gallons as factors responsible for road crashes and the loss of lives in the country.
“I’m advising drivers to insure that they always check the manufacturing and expiry dates of tyres before buying. Using similar tyres can jeopardize the lives of motorists and their passengers.
“Always use seat belts, motorists must retain valid licences, insure passengers overload are duly filled and stop carrying petrol in gallons to help mishaps and gratuitous loss of lives on the roadways.
“A joint task force will be constituted to insure that motorists disobeying traffic rules and regulations are penalized consequently,” she said.
Speaking on behalf of the drivers and transport unions, Mr Ozoemena Okoye, Chairman, Truck Drivers Association of Nigeria, promised to cooperate and support the new Sector Commander to succeed.
“We’ll take this communication to our variius transport companies and unions, and insure our motorists cleave to road safety rules but we appeal to FRSC officers to treat motorists as mates in progress,” he said.
