The Peace and Development Unit of the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office, the UN Information Centre (UNIC) and UN Women, in collaboration with the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR) organized an event marked the ‘International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief’ on 22 August 2024, at the UN House.
The observance is to raise awareness about the need for religious tolerance, strengthen support for victims (including women and children) of acts of violence based on religion or belief and contribute to the Government of Nigeria’s effort towards fostering a more inclusive, safe and peaceful society.
Mr Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary -General message through the Senior Human Rights Advisor Ms Adwoa Kufour -Owusu, stated, “Let us reaffirm our commitment to creating a world where everyone, regardless of their religion or beliefs, can live free from fear, stigma, and persecution”.

The Panel discussion highlighted the importance of strengthening protection mechanisms for marginalized groups such as women, youths & Persons with Disabilities, including the empowerment and inclusion of women in governance structures of both formal and informal religious bodies to enable women’s participation in decision making processes and advance Women‘s Peace and Security (WPS).
The participants, including religious leaders, interfaith champions, women mediators, youth peace ambassadors, civil society organizations, faith-based organizations all shared ideas on ways to prevent and address religious violence in line with the principles of Freedom of Religion or Belief (FORB) and promote peaceful coexistence in Nigeria.
