First Lady Oluremi Tinubu Commissions COWA Multi-Purpose Skills Acquisition Centre in Abuja

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Bola Tinubu, accompanied by the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, and the Minister of Women Affairs, commissioned the COWA Multi-Purpose Skills Acquisition Centre in Karu Customs Barracks, Abuja, on Saturday, 16 November, 2024.

The state-of-the-art facility was built under the leadership of the National President of Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), Mrs. Kikelomo Adewale Adeniyi,

In her remarks, the First Lady, represented by the wife of the Vice President, Nana Kashim Shettima, lauded Mrs. Adeniyi for her dedication to empowering women through socio-economic development initiatives.

Mrs. Shettima described the project as a key element of the ‘Renewed Hope’ agenda and encouraged its judicious use by members of COWA and residents of Abuja.

She stated, “I encourage you to take full advantage of the training programs offered at this facility. Embrace the joy of learning, let your curiosity guide you, and work together to ensure this Centre remains a valuable resource for generations to come.”

Addressing the gathering, the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, praised the project as a symbol of commitment to community development.

“Karu holds a special place for the Nigeria Customs Service, housing over 80% of our junior officers and their families. This Centre is another significant contribution to the well-being of this vibrant community,” CGC Adeniyi said.

He added, “Through this Skills Acquisition Centre, we are rewriting the narrative of women and community development in Nigeria. The training programs will empower individuals and foster economic growth. I am pleased to announce that in 2025, we will prioritise and complete existing skills acquisition projects, such as the one at Seme Border, to further extend these benefits.”

The Customs Boss, also, commended the synergy between the First Lady’s Renewed Hope initiative and the philanthropic efforts of Mrs. Nana Kashim Shettima in Borno State, noting the widespread impact of such programs on underprivileged communities.

In her address, Mrs. Kikelomo Adewale Adeniyi expressed gratitude to the First Lady and other stakeholders for their support in bringing the vision of the Skills Acquisition Centre to life.

“This Centre stands as a beacon of empowerment, offering diverse training programs that equip women with the skills and confidence necessary to thrive in today’s world.” She said.

She highlighted the various training opportunities available, including ICT, tailoring, catering, and Adire-making, among others, describing them as vital tools for economic empowerment and personal growth.

“This facility represents hope and dedication to uplifting women. It will undoubtedly have a ripple effect on the economic, social, and environmental outcomes for our members, their families, and their communities.” Mrs. Adeniyi stated.

She acknowledged the unwavering support of her husband, the Comptroller-General of Customs, the generosity of donors, and the dedication of COWA members, which collectively made the Centre a reality.
