There is need for households in Lagos to inculcate the habit of food waste reduction, waste segregation and waste recycling as this will go a long way in mitigating the effect of methane emissions that contribute largely to climate change and global warming.
This is the position of the Pan African Vision for the Environment (PAVE) during a “One Day Awareness and Capacity Building Workshop for Households in some selected Lagos communities on Organic Waste Management to Reduce Methane Emissions.”

In his remark, Anthony Akpan, President of PAVE noted that by the time households reduce organic wastes emanating from biodegradable materials, there will be a limited food wastes that ended up in the landfills.
He said sorting of wastes from the source, apart from promoting sustainable waste management is also another strategy that helps reduces the contamination of recyclable materials.
According to him “Over 68% of organic wastes that is said to be generated from the households which simply means 1.3million tonnes of methane is being generated annually in Nigeria. This is of great concerns to us at PAVE, so we believe that taking this systemic approach will see to its reduction in no distant future” he stressed.
While talking about the essence of MAMRN Project, Akpan opined that
“The Multi-Solving Action to Methane Reduction in Nigeria (MAMRN) project represents a transformative step in Nigeria’s environmental landscape. Designed as a collaborative, multi-stakeholder initiative, MAMRN aims to tackle methane emissions from organic waste through the implementation of data-driven, community-led zero-waste strategies.
“The project underscores the critical role of methane as a short-lived climate pollutant, highlighting the urgency to curb emissions using practical, inclusive, and scalable waste management approaches.
“The MAMRN Project is funded by the Global Methane Hub (GMH) and implemented in partnership with the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA). The MAMRN project brings together a consortium of Nigerian organisations, including SRADev, CODAF, CfEW, SEDI, and PAVE. The project is being piloted across four key urban centres: Lagos, Abuja, Jos, and Benin City.
To ensure alignment and synergy across the consortium, a one-day inception workshop was held on March 3, 2025, convening project leads and representatives of all implementing partners.
The workshop was hosted in Lagos in Apapa-Iganmu, Itire-Ikate and Coker-Aguda LCDAs on Saturday April 19, 2025, Tuesday, April 22, 2025 and Wednesday, April 23, 2025 respectively, with both in-person and remote participation, effectively launching the project’s operational phase.
In his remarks, Khalifa Ibrahim Tijani, CDC Publicity Secretary in Itire-Ikate LCDA while appreciating the facilitator of the workshop congratulated all participants and urged them to be proactive in managing their wastes so as to have cleaner and safer environment to live in.
Other stakeholders that graced the event are representatives of all the wards that makes up the LCDAs among whom are Mallam Sanni Ogidan, CDC Chairman, Coker-Aguda LCDA, Mr. Debo Daodu, Chairman Coker-Aguda LCDA Farmers Association among others.
