As the international maritime community marks International Maritime Day (IMD) 2025, Dr. Adewale Adeyanju, Vice Chairman of the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) and Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has extended heartfelt congratulations to seafarers and stakeholders across the globe.
Speaking at a commemorative gathering held at Ikoyi Hotel, Lagos, Adeyanju urged for global unity in preserving the ocean, underscoring its economic, environmental, and humanitarian importance.

This year’s IMD theme — “Our Ocean, Our Obligation, Our Opportunity” — resonates deeply, he said, calling it a “powerful reminder of our duty to safeguard the sea for future generations.”
“The ocean provides food, biodiversity, employment, and regulates the climate. But it can only continue to do so if we protect it,” Adeyanju emphasized.
In a message of support for Nigeria’s evolving blue economy, Adeyanju lauded the achievements of Hon. Adegboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, noting that the ministry is “building a strong foundation for sustainable marine development.”
“Minister Oyetola has done remarkably well in creating awareness and job opportunities. His vision is helping Nigeria tap into its vast marine potential,” he said.
Adeyanju encouraged Nigerian youth to pursue careers in the maritime and blue economy sectors, describing them as vital pillars for future trade, wealth creation, and global relevance.
Adeyanju stressed the urgency for Nigeria and other nations to join forces with global leaders to formulate policies aimed at reducing hazardous emissions and preventing ocean degradation.
“We must align with international standards like the ISPS Code, and ensure that our maritime operations are not only profitable but also environmentally sustainable,” he said.
He warned that failure to protect marine ecosystems could lead to devastating losses in trade, jobs, and biodiversity — issues that directly impact national economies.
In his closing remarks, Comrade Adeyanju extended solidarity to maritime professionals worldwide, praising their resilience, expertise, and dedication.
“Today, as a proud Maritimer, I celebrate with my colleagues in Nigeria and beyond. Let us unite to protect our oceans. Together, we can secure the future of maritime trade and preserve nature’s most valuable gift.”
