Ogun State is poised to take a giant leap in Nigeria’s aviation and economic landscape as the Gateway International Airport, Iperu-Ilishan, begins full flight operations on October 7, 2025.
The new facility, which has been described as a “game-changer” for the state and the Southwest region, will debut with direct commercial flights between Ogun and Abuja, operated by ValueJet Airlines.
Flights from Gateway International Airport (GWI) to Abuja are scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday at 8:30 a.m., while return flights from Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja, will depart on the same days at 4:00 p.m.
Officials say the airport’s opening will do more than connect Ogun to the Federal Capital Territory. It is strategically positioned to serve as a modern aviation hub, boosting the state’s industrial base, expanding trade routes, and making Ogun a preferred destination for both business and leisure travelers.

Governor Dapo Abiodun, whose administration has prioritized infrastructure and investment, said the project represents Ogun’s future vision of becoming a “gateway state in more than just name.”
“Gateway International Airport is designed as an enabler of economic growth. It will enhance investor confidence, ease movement of goods and services, and open Ogun to new opportunities in commerce, tourism, and industrialization,” he noted.
Aviation analysts also project that the airport will ease the pressure on Lagos airports while offering travelers in Ogun and neighboring states a closer, world-class alternative.
Beyond flights, the facility is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs, attract foreign and local investments, and strengthen Ogun’s role in Nigeria’s evolving aviation and logistics corridors.
Tickets for the inaugural flights became available on September 25, 2025, through online platforms, accredited agents, and ValueJet ticket offices.
With its first flight milestone, the Gateway International Airport signals not only the take-off of aircraft but also the take-off of Ogun State’s vision as a regional hub for aviation, commerce, and development.
