Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has reaffirmed Lagos State’s commitment to harnessing its vast waterways for sustainable growth, innovation, and long-term prosperity, positioning the state as a continental leader in Africa’s emerging blue economy.

Speaking at the African Blue Economy Summit: Lagos 2025, themed “Harnessing Africa’s Blue Natural Capital for Sustainable Growth” and held at Azuri Towers, Eko Atlantic City, the governor said Lagos is uniquely placed to integrate sustainability, climate resilience, and economic development into its long-term vision.

Sanwo-Olu noted that the State Government is leveraging the E1 Lagos GP championship, currently hosted in Lagos, as a platform to promote climate innovation and inspire young leaders in the areas of economy, entertainment, technology, and marine infrastructure.

“Our waterways are not just natural assets; they are economic lifelines. We are investing in water transport, maritime infrastructure, and climate adaptation to ensure Lagos becomes Africa’s hub for sustainable marine development,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

The governor further stressed that Lagos is determined to pioneer a climate-smart blue economy, ensuring that marine resources are protected while driving new opportunities in trade, tourism, and technology.

Stakeholders at the summit hailed Lagos’ leadership in pushing Africa’s blue economy agenda, citing the state’s investments in water transport reforms, dredging projects, and public-private partnerships that promote innovation and sustainability.

The event brought together policymakers, investors, climate experts, and maritime stakeholders to explore opportunities in Africa’s oceans and inland waterways, with Lagos presented as a model for other coastal states.

Sanwo-Olu concluded by reaffirming that Lagos will remain at the forefront of the global conversation on climate change adaptation and marine innovation, pledging to expand the state’s maritime sector to boost jobs, investments, and environmental resilience.
