As the world celebrates the United Nations International Day of the Girl Child 2025, Nigerian women advocates, educators, and community leaders are joining forces to dismantle social barriers that continue to limit the girl child’s potential.
At an event themed “Breaking Stereotypes for the Girl Child”, the Growth Mindset and Integrative Lifestyle Academy, in collaboration with Women Aligned for Growth (WAG), The Women International (TWI), and the Healthy Children & Impactful Youths Communities, renewed their collective commitment to empowering girls with the mindset, knowledge, and opportunities to thrive.
The initiative—anchored by the Pink-Up for Girls campaign pioneered by The Women International (TWI)—emphasizes training young girls to embrace confidence, creativity, and leadership, while breaking free from restrictive cultural and social norms.

Speaking during the event, Dr. Ifeyinwa Nwakwesi, Growth Mindset and Integrative Lifestyle Specialist and Executive Chair of the Growth Mindset and Integrative Lifestyle Academy, called for a national shift in attitude toward the girl child.
“Girls must understand that they are blessed with unique gifts and the power to shape their own future,” Dr. Nwakwesi said.
“They must learn to live authentically, maintain a positive mindset, and nurture their creativity. No one should steal their joy or diminish their worth.”
She urged women to take up mentorship roles and guide younger girls through challenges and opportunities, while also emphasizing that boys must be part of the change process.
“We must raise boys who grow into men that respect and uplift women,” she added.
New Fund Targets Early Marriage and Gender-Based Challenges
As part of the event’s outcomes, Women Aligned for Growth (WAG) announced the establishment of a Women and Youth Upscale Impact Fund—a dedicated platform to strengthen advocacy and interventions addressing early marriage, abuse, prostitution, and other challenges confronting the girl child.
According to Dr. Nwakwesi, the fund will be instrumental in implementing sustainable programs that protect and empower girls at the community level.
Challenging Gender Norms and Expanding Opportunities
Participants identified key strategies to help dismantle stereotypes and promote gender equality, including:
- Showcasing diverse female role models in STEM, leadership, and entrepreneurship.
- Encouraging girls to explore non-traditional interests free of gender bias.
- Promoting open conversations about gender norms and media representation.
- Providing leadership opportunities to boost confidence and skills.
- Creating supportive environments through mentorship and community collaboration.
Dr. Nwakwesi noted that breaking stereotypes is “a critical step toward achieving gender equality and unlocking the full potential of the girl child.”
“When we empower girls, we are investing in the future of families, communities, and the nation,” she said.
Collaboration for Impact
The coalition reaffirmed that meaningful progress will require consistent advocacy, stronger mentorship structures, and inclusive education that equips girls to thrive in a digital and fast-evolving world.
Through this partnership, the Growth Mindset and Integrative Lifestyle Academy, WAG, and TWI are helping redefine what it means to be a girl in today’s Nigeria—bold, brilliant, and unafraid to dream.
