As the world marks World Polio Day, the wife of Anambra State Governor, Dr. Nonye Soludo, has urged residents to renew their commitment to ensuring every child in the state receives the polio vaccine, stressing that the disease must never be allowed to return.
Speaking in Awka on Friday during an event to commemorate the day—celebrated annually on October 24—Dr. Soludo, who is also the Founder of the Healthy Living Initiative, called on all stakeholders to sustain the collective fight against polio under this year’s theme, “End Polio: Every Child, Every Vaccine, Everywhere.”
She noted that while Nigeria had recorded significant milestones in its polio eradication campaign, complacency could reverse the gains already achieved.
“We must not let our guards down for any reason,” she cautioned.
“To consign polio to history forever, we must sustain the vaccination campaign and ensure that no child, no matter how remote their location, is left behind.”
Dr. Soludo emphasized the need for renewed public commitment to the state’s eradication efforts, adding that protecting children from preventable diseases must remain a top priority.
“As we mark World Polio Day, we celebrate our progress but must also strengthen our resolve. Every child in Anambra deserves full protection from this crippling disease,” she said.
She also appealed to parents, community leaders, civil society groups, and religious institutions to counter vaccine hesitancy and misinformation within their communities, stressing that the polio vaccine is safe, effective, and free.
“The government will continue to play its part, but the responsibility begins with every household. Every child must be vaccinated to stay healthy and safe,” she urged.
Dr. Soludo reaffirmed the Anambra State Government’s partnership with health agencies and community stakeholders to ensure the state remains polio-free, calling it a shared duty that demands vigilance and unity.
