In a decisive move to strengthen climate resilience and mitigate the effects of flooding and erosion, the Oyo State Government, through the Nigeria Climate Adaptation–Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP–EIB), has commenced a statewide inspection of stormwater management and environmental rehabilitation sites.
The inspection exercise, spanning the three senatorial zones of the state, is part of the Oyo State Nigeria Climate Adaptation–Erosion and Watershed Project–EIB (OYONEWMAP–EIB) initiative. The exercise aims to verify earlier assessments, evaluate community preparedness, and ensure smooth implementation of upcoming interventions.

Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Barr. (Hon.) Seun Ashamu, led the inspection team comprising the State Project Coordinator, Barr. Tayo Ayoade, and members of the State Project Management Unit (SPMU). The team visited several erosion-prone communities, including Obananko and Cele Area (Oyo West), Fedomu (Igbeti), LAUTECH erosion site (Ogbomoso), Ebu Angelu (Atiba), Maje Stream (Oluyole), and Aborerin (Eruwa).
Speaking during the tour, Barr. Ashamu described the NEWMAP–EIB as a transformative, multi-sectoral programme supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB) to address erosion, restore degraded lands, and enhance climate adaptation nationwide. He noted that the initiative is projected to benefit more than 750,000 Nigerians and create over 25,000 jobs by 2030.
“Oyo State is proud to be part of this forward-looking programme,” he stated. “Our goal is to ensure that the benefits are felt directly by our people through improved flood control, land restoration, waste management reform, and the creation of sustainable, climate-resilient communities.”
He emphasized that the Makinde-led administration views the NEWMAP–EIB project as more than an infrastructural intervention, but as a long-term investment in environmental security and sustainable development.
“Under Governor Seyi Makinde’s leadership, Oyo State is demonstrating its commitment to protecting lives, livelihoods, and the environment,” he added. “Our efforts to reclaim degraded lands and mitigate flooding reaffirm our resolve to build a cleaner and safer future for all.”
Barr. Ashamu further disclosed that the state has fulfilled its counterpart funding obligations to ensure seamless project take-off. Oyo State also participated in the national project launch in Abuja, underscoring its readiness to implement the initiative in line with national objectives.
Community members and local leaders across the visited areas expressed optimism about the project’s commencement, pledging their cooperation and support. The Commissioner encouraged residents to complement the government’s efforts by maintaining proper waste disposal habits, avoiding construction on waterways, and participating actively in community-based environmental programmes.
