The Nigeria Customs Service on Thursday, 20 November 2025, launched the 2025 Comptroller-General of Customs’ Conference in Abuja with a direct charge to its senior leadership: strengthen internal discipline or risk undermining the Service’s growing continental influence.
Held at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, the conference brought top Customs officers together to assess internal performance challenges and design strategies to reposition the Service for future demands. This year’s theme, “Building Future Partnerships: Lessons from the Customs-PACT Conference,” echoed the need to draw practical insights from the recently concluded Customs Partnership for African Cooperation in Trade (C-PACT) Summit.
Declaring the event open, Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, stressed that the professionalism and coordination showcased during the global summit must be replicated within the Service itself. He reminded the officers that the eyes of the world had been on Nigeria just 24 hours earlier as customs leaders, private-sector actors, and regional representatives converged in Abuja for the landmark C-PACT engagement.

Adeniyi also delivered a sobering reminder: “You can’t sustain external credibility without internal integrity. Turn the mirror inward and force honest discussions about what is working, what is failing and what must change.”
He emphasized that the real aim of the conference was to translate the operational discipline that powered the C-PACT Summit—rapid conflict resolution, unified messaging, seamless coordination—into the everyday culture of the Nigeria Customs Service. Adeniyi pointed to the 16 consecutive weeks of planning meetings that ensured the summit’s flawless execution, insisting that such commitment must no longer be reserved for special events alone.
The two-day conference will feature rigorous panel discussions, thought-provoking presentations, and open-floor dialogue structured to prioritize ideas over hierarchy—an approach Adeniyi believes is essential to evolving the Service into a more agile, accountable institution.
