The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has underscored the growing role of technology, transparency, and stakeholder collaboration in driving efficient trade operations, as the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, met with officers and members of the trading community in Kano.
The engagement, held during the Comptroller-General’s working visit to the Kano/Jigawa Area Command, focused on how ongoing reforms and digital innovations are reshaping Customs operations while strengthening compliance with established regulations.
Adeniyi explained that the Service’s trade facilitation agenda is increasingly being powered by technology-driven systems designed to reduce human interference, improve efficiency, and block revenue leakages. He highlighted the deployment of the indigenous B’Odogwu clearance platform as a major milestone, noting that it has improved transparency and streamlined cargo processing across commands.

He further revealed that the use of electronic tracking devices on transit containers has enhanced monitoring and enforcement, leading to the detection of diverted consignments and the arrest of offenders. According to him, these measures demonstrate the Service’s resolve to protect legitimate trade while tightening controls against abuse. “With technology in place, accountability is strengthened, and compliance becomes non-negotiable,” he stated.
Beyond technology, the Comptroller-General stressed the importance of professionalism within the Service, reminding officers that their conduct directly impacts public trust and operational success. He urged personnel of the Kano/Jigawa Command to remain disciplined and committed, describing integrity as the backbone of effective Customs administration.
Adeniyi also praised the leadership of the Customs Area Controller, Kano/Jigawa Command, Comptroller Dalhatu Abubakar, for sustaining strong relationships with stakeholders and delivering impressive results in revenue performance. He noted that proactive engagement with the trading community has helped address operational challenges and foster mutual understanding.
In his response, Comptroller Abubakar Dalhatu acknowledged the support of stakeholders, describing them as indispensable partners in achieving Customs’ objectives. He said the Command’s progress reflects shared responsibility and continuous dialogue between Customs and the business community.
Stakeholders at the forum welcomed the emphasis on technology and openness, applauding the Service for reforms that promote predictability, compliance, and smoother trade processes. Many expressed confidence that sustained collaboration would further enhance revenue generation and facilitate legitimate commerce in the region.
