From a rapid-response perspective, the Nigerian Navy’s routine patrol posture proved decisive on Monday, 22 December 2025, when officers of the Eastern Naval Command swiftly intervened to save lives following a fire outbreak aboard Motor Vessel (MV) CHIMBA EXPRESS along the Calabar Channel.
Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) OSE, deployed on patrol in line with directives from the Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral CD Okehie, received a distress call at about 1300 hours from the vessel, which was en route to Calabar from Gabon. The ship was conveying scrap materials and other logistics, with 21 persons on board—14 Nigerians and 7 Cameroonians.
Upon arrival at the incident location, the patrol team sighted thick smoke billowing from the vessel, indicating an active fire emergency. Naval personnel immediately initiated rescue operations, evacuating crew members who had abandoned the ship as well as others trapped on the weather deck. Twenty crew members were safely recovered and administered first aid on site.

The vessel’s Chief Engineer, who reportedly jumped into the water in fear of an explosion, remains unaccounted for, as search and rescue efforts continue.
Beyond the evacuation, the naval response played a critical role in fire containment. With support from other Nigerian Navy units operating within the Eastern axis and assistance from local fishermen, the fire was successfully confined to the midship and aft sections of the vessel. This timely action prevented the blaze from spreading to the forecastle, where additional materials and logistics were stored, thereby averting a potentially catastrophic escalation.
Speaking on behalf of the Commander, Nigerian Navy Ship VICTORY, the Base Operations Officer, Lieutenant Commander KK Ahunanya, praised the professionalism and gallantry displayed by the officers and ratings involved. He reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to maritime safety and the protection of lives and property, in alignment with the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff and the operational leadership of Rear Admiral CD Okehie.
The incident highlights the importance of constant naval presence and readiness, demonstrating how swift decision-making and coordinated action can make the difference between disaster and survival within Nigeria’s maritime domain.
