From a focus on restraint rather than revelry, a Catholic priest has reminded Christians that Christmas is meant to renew faith and compassion, not fuel social pressure or excess spending.
Speaking during a Christmas service at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, Archbishop Obiefuna Retreat Centre, Okpuno, Rev. Fr. Chimaobi Okoye emphasized that the season commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and should inspire thoughtful living.
He cautioned against turning Christmas into a competition of appearances or expenses, noting that many people feel pushed to spend beyond their means in order to meet social expectations.

According to the cleric, the true meaning of Christmas is found in simplicity, reflection, and gratitude, rather than in luxury or public display of success.
He urged believers to allow the celebration to shape their daily lives by practicing love, selflessness, and service, adding that genuine observance of Christmas should translate into positive contributions to families and communities.
Okoye concluded by encouraging Christians to model their lives after Christ’s example, using the season as an opportunity to strengthen moral values and care for others.
