The Nigeria Police Force has announced the official assumption of duty of Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) Okunade Ronke Nurat, as the 24th Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Maritime Police Command, Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos.
Her appointment follows a strategic deployment by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen security and operational efficiency within Nigeria’s critical maritime domain. AIG Okunade succeeds AIG Chinedu Oko, psc, and is expected to consolidate and advance the Command’s mandate of safeguarding the nation’s coastal and inland waterways.

AIG Okunade Ronke Nurat, is an indigene of Ogbomosho North Local Government Area of Oyo State. She holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree in Psychology from the University of Ibadan. Her policing career began in 1992, when she was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. She received her professional training at the Nigeria Police Academy Annex, Kaduna, and was subsequently commissioned as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), completing her mandatory one-year attachment at the Ondo State Police Command.
Over Three Decades of Exemplary Policing
With a career spanning more than three decades, AIG Okunade has served the Nigeria Police Force in a wide range of operational, administrative, and investigative capacities across the Federation. Her postings include investigative and provost duties at the Force Provost Office, Force Headquarters Annex, as well as key leadership roles at divisional, area command, and command levels within the Railway Command, Airport Command, and several State Police Commands.
She has also played pivotal roles in senior administration and criminal investigations, notably at the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos. As a Commissioner of Police, she headed specialized units including the Police Special Fraud Unit (PSFU), Milverton, Lagos, and General Investigation, FCID Annex, Lagos, where she earned commendation for professionalism and diligence.
Record-Breaking Leadership and Professional Excellence
Prior to her current appointment, AIG Okunade made history as the first female Commandant and first AIG to head the Police College, Kaduna. Her tenure was marked by significant strides in institutional repositioning, training reforms, and capacity development, further cementing her reputation as a transformational leader.
She has attended numerous professional courses, seminars, and workshops both within and outside Nigeria, and is a respected member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP). Widely regarded for her integrity, discipline, and commitment to the core values of the Nigeria Police Force, AIG Okunade brings a wealth of experience and strategic insight to her new role.
A New Dawn for the Maritime Police Command
Speaking on her assumption of duty, AIG Okunade reaffirmed her commitment to effective maritime security, enhanced inter-agency collaboration, and sustained public confidence in policing Nigeria’s maritime environment. She pledged to work closely with officers and personnel of the Maritime Police Command, as well as relevant stakeholders, to usher in what she described as “a new dawn” for the Command.
