The Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Maritime Police Command, AIG Okunade Ronke Nurat, has unveiled a reform-driven leadership agenda focused on intelligence-led policing, professionalism and collective responsibility within the Command.
She outlined this vision during her Maiden Lecture Parade held at the Force Headquarters Annex, Lagos, marking her first formal engagement with officers, men and women of the Maritime Police Command since assuming office as its 24th AIG.

Addressing personnel drawn from various units and departments, AIG Okunade described the parade as a strategic platform to realign the Command with the broader reform objectives of the Nigeria Police Force, particularly within the nation’s sensitive and economically vital maritime domain.
She expressed gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, for the confidence reposed in her, affirming her commitment to advancing his vision of a modern, accountable and citizen-focused police force.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Adebayo Rasheed Adesayo, anipr., the AIG acknowledged the demanding nature of maritime policing and commended officers for their resilience amid operational, environmental and security challenges unique to Nigeria’s waterways.
While underscoring discipline as a core professional value, AIG Okunade framed it as an enabler of efficiency and public confidence, stressing that respect for lawful authority, adherence to the chain of command and ethical conduct are essential to effective service delivery.
She also highlighted the importance of intelligence-led operations, urging personnel to prioritise information gathering, analysis and proactive response over reactive policing. Officers were reminded to carry out their duties with fairness, restraint and sound judgment, noting that the police uniform represents public trust and national authority.
The AIG further aligned her command priorities with the IGP’s strategic focus on operational excellence, inter-agency cooperation and crime prevention, particularly in safeguarding maritime assets critical to national economic growth.
On teamwork and inclusiveness, she called for unity within the Command, emphasising that effective policing of Nigeria’s waterways requires close collaboration among officers, sister security agencies and key maritime stakeholders.
The parade concluded with assurances of purposeful leadership and a merit-driven command structure that recognises diligence, integrity and commitment to duty.
Responding on behalf of the Command, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration), DCP Chuks Obasi, psc, pledged the full cooperation and support of officers and men, reaffirming their readiness to align with the AIG’s leadership direction and the reform agenda of the Inspector-General of Police.
The Maritime Police Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism and effective service delivery, while encouraging sustained stakeholder engagement to strengthen security across Nigeria’s maritime environment.
