Mayor Apanisile Delivers Clean Water, Hygiene Facilities to Over 4,500 Pupils in Ikorodu North

Ikorodu North Local Council Development Area (LCDA) has recorded another milestone as the Executive Chairman, Mayor Ameen Olawale Ibrahim Apanisile, commissioned and handed over solar-powered water and sanitation facilities to three public primary schools within the council.

The intervention, facilitated by WaterAid Nigeria and funded by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS Church) under the Strengthening Water and Sanitation Delivery Project, aims to expand access to clean drinking water, safe toilets, and improved hygiene practices for schoolchildren and surrounding communities.

The beneficiary schools include Idera Community Primary School, Idera, Zummuratul Islamiyyah Primary School, Odogunyan as well as African Bethel Primary School, Erikorodo with each institution receiving, a solar-powered borehole, a 12,000-litre elevated water tank, 24 gender-friendly toilet cubicles and fetching points and handwashing stations.

The facilities will directly benefit over 4,500 pupils and staff, while indirectly impacting nearly 14,000 residents across the communities.

Speaking at the event, Mayor Apanisile described the project as a legacy for future generations, urging pupils, teachers, and community leaders to ensure proper maintenance.

“These facilities are not just for today but for generations to come. Education and the wellbeing of our children remain at the heart of my administration, and we will continue to deliver projects that uplift lives at the grassroots,” he said.

The Mayor also commended the collaboration of WaterAid Nigeria, the LDS Church, Lagos State Ministry of Education, SUBEB, and local stakeholders, stressing that partnerships remain crucial to sustainable community development.

The commissioning was graced by notable figures including Mr. Halidou Koanda, Regional Programme Director, WaterAid West Africa, Dr. Adebayo Alao, Head of Lagos Sub-office, WaterAid Nigeria, Ukeme Essien, Regional PMER/Systems Advisor, WaterAid West Africa, Alh. Taiwo Odumbo, Executive Secretary, Ikorodu LGEA, Mrs. Adebisi Sarah Abolarinwa, Head of Section, Ikorodu LGEA and Engr. Oyedele James, Director of Water Resources, Office of Drainage Services and Water Resources

Community leaders and school administrators however pledged full commitment to sustaining the facilities, with some schools already appointing dedicated toilet managers to oversee daily cleaning and upkeep.

The successful completion and handover of these projects once again highlight the people-focused leadership style of Mayor Ameen Olawale Ibrahim Apanisile, whose administration continues to champion education, health, and sustainable development across Ikorodu North LCDA.
