In a strategic move to enhance professionalism and sharpen the operational capabilities of its workforce, the Tincan Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has concluded a week-long in-house training programme for senior officers.
The capacity-building initiative, which ran from Monday, October 13 to Friday, October 17, was held within the Command premises and brought together senior officers across various units and departments. The programme aimed at equipping officers with up-to-date knowledge and skills to meet the evolving demands of modern customs operations.

Speaking at the opening of the training, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Frank Onyeka, underscored the critical role of continuous learning in driving institutional effectiveness.
In his remarks, Onyeka noted “This training is not just a routine exercise but an investment in the growth of the personnel of the Service, I urge all officers to apply the knowledge gained to their daily responsibilities and strive for excellence in service delivery.”
He further revealed that the just-concluded training focused on senior officers, while plans are already in motion to extend similar training opportunities to junior officers. This, he said, is part of the Command’s commitment to ensuring no cadre is left behind in its quest for improved professionalism and efficiency.
In a show of internal capacity, all resource persons for the programme were drawn from within the Command. Topics covered during the sessions included:
- Physical Examination (handled personally by Comptroller Onyeka)
- Reputation Management
- Risk Management and Documentary Checks
- Evidence Exploitation
- Customs Procedure Codes and Classification
- VIN and Customs Valuation
- Code of Conduct
- Customs Administration, among others.
The sessions were designed to be practical and interactive, offering officers real-life tools and techniques to improve daily operations.
Participants expressed satisfaction with the quality of the training and the relevance of the topics discussed. Many described it as one of the most engaging and enlightening internal training programmes in recent years.
Assistant Controller Rose Bonat of the Transire Unit hailed the initiative as “laudable and forward-thinking.” She noted that the sessions provided her with updated Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and refreshed her understanding of key operational areas.
“This training has broadened my understanding and equipped me with tools that are directly applicable to my role, I commend the leadership of the Command for investing in the professional growth of officers” AC Bonat said.
In his closing remarks, Comptroller Onyeka reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to building a skilled and knowledgeable workforce ready to tackle the challenges of 21st-century customs operations.
The Tincan Island Port Command’s training initiative is seen as part of a broader effort by the Nigeria Customs Service to reposition itself as a modern, tech-savvy, and performance-driven agency in line with global best practices.
