In a high-stakes follow-up operation, the FCT Police Command has neutralized the notorious gang leader behind the foiled June robbery in Apo Resettlement, recovering a cache of deadly weapons and reaffirming its crackdown on violent crime.
Acting on precise intelligence, operatives from the Anti-Kidnapping Unit of the FCT Police Command stormed a suspected gang hideout at Kurape Hills on September 9, 2025. The operation targeted members of the criminal gang linked to the June 23rd armed attack at Zone E Extension, Apo Resettlement — a brazen incident that sent shockwaves through the capital.
The gang, believed to have infiltrated the Federal Capital Territory from the Nasarawa forests through Karshi, was reportedly plotting another attack when the police closed in.
On sighting the operatives, the criminals opened fire, triggering a fierce gun battle. In the exchange, the gang leader — identified as Umar Manu, alias “Small” — was fatally neutralized. Other gang members fled the scene with suspected gunshot injuries.
Recovered from the encounter were:
- One AK-49 rifle (breech number A529)
- One AK-47 rifle (breech number defaced)
- One AK-49 rifle (breech number defaced)
- Three loaded magazines
- Eleven rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition
Two officers, including the Commander of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, sustained minor injuries and were treated and discharged.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ajao S. Adewale, praised the operatives for their bravery and professionalism, reaffirming the Command’s commitment to ridding the FCT of violent crime.
“This is a clear message to criminal elements: if you test our resolve, you will meet the same fate as ‘Small’,” CP Adewale stated.
He also appealed to healthcare providers, hospitals, and clinics to remain vigilant and report anyone presenting with gunshot wounds or suspicious injuries to the police via the emergency lines: 08032003913 or 08028940883.
